Company 3 runs tractor-trailer wreck
Sat. Sep 26th 2009

At 5:30AM, Bedford Dispatch alerted Company 3 (1st due) of a tractor trailer wreck just north of Eagle Eyrie.  Fire/Rescue 3 responded with four to arrive and assist Company 2 in traffic control and provide scene lighting.  Other members stayed behind at Station 3 since a lot of staffing was not required with Company 2 already on scene.

Fire/Rescue 3 arrived to find one tractor trailer over the guard rail into a large poplar tree.  The light tower was erected and units began helping build a small dike to capture the leaking diesel fuel.  The tractor was secured to keep from shifting while members were working below to contain the leak.  Traffic control was set-up and VDOT arrived on scene to take over traffic.

Glenn A. Trent wrecker service arrived with three large recovery units to pull the tractor trailer back onto the roadway.  The approximate gross weight recovered was 65K.  Assistant Chief 3 used the K12 to cut and remove the damaged sections of guardrail and one post so the wreckers could work.  The driver escaped with no injuries.  All units cleared around 10:30.  Units on scene were B-2, E-2, F/R-3, Medic 3-3, VASP, VDOT and Glenn A. Trent Wrecker Service.  A special thanks to Dudley's Restaurant for providing early morning refreshments and breakfast!  Another special thanks to Mr. Trent for his generous donation to the fire department!
